A WildEarth camera crew are based on Tswalu Kalahari Reserve, South Africa, and every morning at 07h30 CAT (01h30 EST) they start filming the Gosa meerkat gang and stay with them throughout the day.
They are filming this all in 3D using ground breaking new technology that allows us to watch the process of making this 3D documentary series LIVE and from the meerkat’s point of view.
The camera crew, led by Rob Bruyns, started habituating the meerkats in late February 2012. At this point the alpha female, Cleo, was pregnant and we all looked forward to some baby meerkats being born soon. She gave birth in the Sour-grass burrow on the 16th of March 2012, but the next morning the whole gang got up and left foraging for the day … they have not yet returned to that burrow and we have no idea what happened to her pups!
Then during April the Jaco’s dune gang were ousted from their burrows by the Rockstar gang and they (Jaco’s dune gang) decided to invade the Gosa gang’s territory. At first the Jaco’s dune gang ‘took over’ the Gosa dam burrow, but more recently they have been staying in the Bird’s nest burrow, while the Gosa gang have retaken the Gosa dam burrow.
